Growing Up in Knoxville

One great right of passage for all tweens and teens is when they get to redecorate their room from toys and kid stuff to a more grown up look.

A close friend of mine has a daughter who has reached that stage and it happened to coincide with a move to Knoxville! She contacted me because her daughter feels like she has a sense of style, but it just was not coming together for her. Lucky for us, she loves her paint color. Her color palate is Mint Green, Violet, and Coral. She loves nature and pandas. One special request was a reading nook. She has bunk beds, but only sleeps on the top bunk.

So, we will start with what the room looks like now. The room is 12ft x 17ft.

So, we will start with the view she sees as she enters her room.

Redecorated View from Room Entrance

She already owns this awesome stacked twin bed. I decorated her sleeping bunk with a violet comforter ($18.96). Pillows are available at Walmart for $2.50 each. On the bottom bunk, I recommend a piece of 3/8in plywood from Lowe's ($14) to support a 3" thick memory foam mattress topper. ($44) This will create a soft seating area while maximizing her head clearance for the top bunk. Mint Green Throw Pillows ($16 for the set) and a Violet Backrest with arms ($31) will make sitting and reading very comfortable. A remote controlled color changing LED Light Strip ($20) means she can set the mood for whatever book is catching her fancy. A 12 cube open slot book case ($70) means that she can access her books from either her reading nook or her desk. A Scientifically Accurate Star Projector ($22) means that she can study the stars as she goes to sleep at night. Separating out this inexpensive tree wall mural ($24) means that she can feel like she's in a meadow instead of a thick forest. A Customized Inspirational Decal ($33) brings in an uplifting line from her favorite movie.

Next is the view if you look to the right.

She already has this standing mirror. I was able to tie in her love for pandas, violet, and nature with this awesome Vinyl Wall Mural. ($29)

Now, turning to the left side of the room.

This view shows just how awesome that 12 Cube bookshelf is. Collapsible baskets are available at Dollar Tree for a Dollar or at other stores for $5-$10 each. This tree wall mural ($31) creates a classy, grown up natural setting with silver butterflies from Dollar Tree. The natural hammock swing ($36) has a padded cushion for peaceful, quiet rocking when she needs a break. The over-door Jewelry Storage Cabinet ($70) will help her keep all those small things organized and protected.

The last image is a view back at the door we came in. The total cost for this makeover is $460.
